Dissertation. Merling evaluates the five main scholarly explanations of the Israelite settlement in Canaan. He also considers the Book of Joshua not as a story about an Israelite conquest but as a story of the Israelites' acquisition of the title to the land and the response of the participants to the events leading to that acquisition. He concludes that both archaeology and the Book of Joshua are limited in details and, while they compliment each other, neither can be used as a validation instrument.
